Healthy foods that unfortunately makes you gain weight
If you are trying to eat healthier for weight loss and the numbers on the scale are not moving down, you’re not alone. Like most things in life, there are many factors that add up to successful weight loss. Fortunately, the majority of these factors are within our control, but a few are not.
Foods that are generally advertised as being “healthy” for someone can actually cause your body more harm than good. Why? We tend to eat more of it because we believe it to be “healthy”. - Salad dressing
Most commercial salad dressings contain ingredients like soya bean oil and high fructose corn syrup, which are calorie dense and, in general, not healthy. It is much healthier to make your own salad dressing using low-calorie ingredients like lemon juice, olive oil, and yogurt.
Too much of a good thing is still a bad thing. “Even healthy foods, like walnuts, avocados, and olive oil can rack up the calories if the portions are out of whack,” Palmer says. After all, a half-cup of walnuts contains nearly 400 calories, a whole avocado contains 322 calories, and three tablespoons of olive oil contains 357 calories and 63 percent of your daily fat needs. Yikes. Use them all, but use them in much smaller portions.
Avocado is a superfood. Each fruit contains almost 10g of fiber and twice the amount of potassium as a banana. In addition to this, avocado has cholesterol lowering properties, reduces the risk of cancer, and improves skin health. Avocados are also a rich source of heart-healthy monounsaturated fat. However, fat is still fat and going overboard with avocado consumption because of its health benefits leads to weight gain.
Even though avocados are more calorie-dense than other fresh produce, and being mindful about avocado portions is important, “eating more calories than your body needs is what causes weight gain, regardless of the foods those calories come from.”
There’s so much information available on what dietary foods can help people lose weight, but the truth is, some of these weight-loss foods can actually make a person gain more weight than they would like. Granola is the perfect example of this—disguised as healthy food, granola is often laced with sugary additives that can lead to more sugar cravings throughout the day.
And remember, sugar is the first thing to blame for weight gain. Skip the bags of sugary granola at the store and make your own at home! This can significantly cut down the sugar, and you can mix in all your favorite nuts, seeds, and dried fruits that you like.
These little foods are packed with nutrients that have a range of health benefits. Nuts are rich sources of antioxidants, protein, and good fat. Nuts are an ideal weight loss snack if eaten in moderation. One ounce of nuts contains about 135 calories. Often, the goodness of nuts leads to them being eaten in excess and weight gain is seen as a result.
- Dried fruits
Dried fruits are rich in nutrients and calories, with one-quarter cup of dried cranberries containing around 130 calories. Many people prefer dried pineapple, cherries, or apples. Dried fruit is widely available online, or a person can dry fresh fruit at home.
Yogurt is extremely healthy but often misunderstood. It is rich in probiotics, which maintains gut health and enhances absorption of nutrients. Low-fat yogurt bought in stores is heavily processed to make it taste better. It is often tempting to choose the low-fat fruit-flavored yogurts.
These are especially bad because of the added sugar. When it comes to consuming yogurt, it is best to limit yourself to about 150 to 200g a day and choose the unflavoured kind. Full-fat yogurt can also provide protein and nutrients. Avoid flavored yogurts and those with lower fat contents, as they often contain added sugars.
6. Protein shakes
Protein shakes can help a person gain weight easily and efficiently. A shake is most effective at helping to build muscle if drunk shortly after a workout. However, it is important to note that premade shakes often contain extra sugar and other additives that should be avoided. Check the labels carefully.
The foods above can help a person to increase their calorie intake in a healthy way but it can also help a person to gain weight. Eat in moderation.
