What Foods Can Cause Diarrhea?
Foods that cause diarrhea vary from person to person. If you have a food sensitivity, consuming that food can result in diarrhea or loose stools.
Here are some foods that may cause diarrhea.
1. Spicy food
Spicy meals are one of the most common causes of food poisoning. Strong spices that your body isn’t acclimated to are especially likely to cause this.
2. Sugar substitutes
Artificial sweeteners (such as aspartame, saccharin, and sucralose) and sugar alcohols are examples of sugar substitutes (e.g., mannitol, sorbitol, and xylitol).
Some sugar alternatives can cause stomach problems. In fact, several meals containing them are labeled with a warning regarding their laxative impact.
3. Milk and other dairy products
You may have lactose intolerance if you have loose stools after drinking milk or consuming dairy products.
Many people are unaware that they are lactose intolerant. It runs in families and can manifest later in life.
Coffee contains caffeine, which is a stimulant. It boosts your mental alertness while also stimulating your digestive system. Many people experience a bowel movement shortly after drinking a cup of coffee. Drinking 2–3 cups of coffee or tea per day, according to the International Foundation for Gastrointestinal Disorders (IFFGD), can cause diarrhea.
Fructose is a natural sugar found in fruit. Eaten in excess, fructose can have a laxative effect. Eating large amounts of fruit can cause diarrhea because this means taking in high levels of fructose.
7. Garlic and onions
Garlic and onions both contain juices that can emit gases and irritate the bowels when broken down by stomach acid.
Garlic and onions are fructans, a type of carbohydrate that the body has trouble digesting. They also have insoluble fiber, which helps foods pass more quickly through the digestive system.
8. Broccoli and cauliflower
Cruciferous veggies include broccoli and cauliflower. They’re nutrient-dense and high in bulk vegetable fiber.
These veggies provide a lot of health benefits, but they can be difficult for the digestive system to handle. A large serving of fiber can cause constipation, gas, or diarrhea if you aren’t used to consuming a lot of it. Start with tiny servings and gradually increase your fiber intake.
Drinking too much alcohol can cause loose stools the next day. When consuming beer or wine, this is especially true.
Remove alcohol from your diet and observe if the diarrhea disappears. If this is the case, you should consider limiting your alcohol consumption to alleviate the intestinal discomfort.
